Dean Color
Established by Richard Dean in 1947, Dean Color and Dean’s Distinctive Photography specializes in commercial and product photography, custom brochures, souvenirs and local view post cards of the Adirondack region. Hailed as the “dean of Adirondack photographers”, Richard Dean produced the largest, most comprehensive collection of Adirondack images in existence. He shot hundreds of thousands of images of Lake George, Lake Placid and other resort villages, and photographed many area hotels, motels, stores, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Richard Dean passed away in February, 2008, at age 94. His imagery and the impact he had on the regional tourist trade lives on. His assistants, son-in-law Everett Bowie and daughter Wendy Chitty, continue to operate the business. They maintain Mr. Dean’s archives of classic images and conduct day-to-day operations of the post card and commercial photography business. Mr. Dean’s images remain available as photographic prints and for commercial licensing. Contact Dean Color for more information:

Mark Bowie has produced a digital presentation — a moving tribute to his grandfather and photographic mentor — entitled “The Photographic Work of Richard Dean”. Bowie shares many of Mr. Dean’s classic images of the Adirondack landscape, its resort villages, people and tourist attractions, and recounts personal anecdotes of the man behind the lens.
