Sunrise Clouds Reflected in Onota Lake, Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Clouds streaming over quiet Onota Lake change from pre-dawn twilight blues to pink and orange as the rising sun alights them, before turning back to cool blues. All this as the billowing fog gets illuminated. A magical morning of solitude.

Streaming Clouds and a Celestial Surprise Over Moss Lake, Adirondacks, New York

In this 2 1/2-hour sequence, in which I shot 30-second exposures with a 2-second interval between them, clouds mask the celestial heavens, but eventually pass by to reveal the grandeur of the Milky Way. About halfway through, watch for the colorful Perseid meteor streaking between clouds to the right of the Milky Way.

Lightning Storm Over Seventh Lake, Adirondacks, New York

In August, an hour-long time-lapse sequence of 30-second exposures captured a lightning storm putting on a natural fireworks display over Seventh Lake, in the Adirondacks' central lake country. Clouds and stars were on the move, reflected in the lake. Airglow, a natural phenomenon caused by cosmic radiation causing particles in our upper atmosphere to chemically luminesce, colors the sky purple and bluish-green. Note how slowly the thunderclouds moved over time.

Hurricane Ridge Star Circles, Olympic National Park, Washington

Atop Hurricane Ridge, I positioned myself so that the North Star was directly over the dip in the ridgeline then shot a 1-hour sequence of 30-second exposures, hoping the resulting star circles would nestle into the curve nicely. StarStax software saved the intermediary files used to create the star circles, and I output them as this movie using Time Lapse Assembler.

Note the moving boats on the Strait of Juan De Fuca, with the lights from the city of Victoria, British Columbia in the distance. The different colored star trails are the result of stars emitting different wavelengths of light; the hottest stars are blue, cooler stars orange to yellow.
